Tourism

The tourism sector is the main contributor to Zanzibar’s economy, with a direct contribution of 29.2% to the GDP. Studies from the private sector have indicated that the direct, indirect, and induced contribution of tourism to Zanzibar’s GDP is over 85%.

 

The President of Zanzibar and the Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, H.E Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi has highlighted the following priorities in this sector:

  1. Increase enabling services that affect tourists entering the island, including Airports, Ports, Road Infrastructure, and Cleanliness of public areas.
  2. Increase efficiency and effectiveness of the Ministry of Land.
  3. Increase High Value and Low impact tourism.
  4. Diversify Tourism products.
  5. Realize the “Tourism for all” vision through cross-sectoral coordination.
  6. Rehabilitate Stone Town buildings and heritage sites.
  7. Mobilize skills to ensure the people of Zanzibar benefit from employment opportunities in the Tourism sector.
  8. Ensure security for all tourists throughout their stay in Zanzibar.
  9. Promote Eco Tourism and Sustainable Tourism agenda throughout the island.
