The tourism sector is the main contributor to Zanzibar’s economy, with a direct contribution of 29.2% to the GDP. Studies from the private sector have indicated that the direct, indirect, and induced contribution of tourism to Zanzibar’s GDP is over 85%.
The President of Zanzibar and the Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, H.E Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi has highlighted the following priorities in this sector:
- Increase enabling services that affect tourists entering the island, including Airports, Ports, Road Infrastructure, and Cleanliness of public areas.
- Increase efficiency and effectiveness of the Ministry of Land.
- Increase High Value and Low impact tourism.
- Diversify Tourism products.
- Realize the “Tourism for all” vision through cross-sectoral coordination.
- Rehabilitate Stone Town buildings and heritage sites.
- Mobilize skills to ensure the people of Zanzibar benefit from employment opportunities in the Tourism sector.
- Ensure security for all tourists throughout their stay in Zanzibar.
- Promote Eco Tourism and Sustainable Tourism agenda throughout the island.
